MANILA, Philippines — Former president Rodrigo Duterte has reportedly collapsed twice while in detention in The Hague, according to his lawyer, Nicholas Kaufman.
Speaking ahead of scheduled proceedings at the International Criminal Court (ICC), Kaufman said Duterte is suffering from severe short-term memory loss, although he still retains long-term recollections.
“He is frail and has collapsed twice while in detention. His condition must be handled with respect and caution,” Kaufman said.
The defense lawyer added that a separate medical report has been submitted to support arguments for Duterte’s interim release. The move comes after the court previously dismissed earlier evidence presented regarding the former president’s physical and cognitive vulnerabilities.
According to Kaufman, Duterte’s health concerns have been extensively documented in medical reports citing age-related conditions and neurological challenges. While the former president reportedly maintains long-term memory, his impaired short-term recollection complicates his ability to consistently provide instructions to legal counsel.
“He is considerably weaker, frailer, and grayer. We are not presenting him publicly just for demonstration,” Kaufman said, referring to preparations for the start of ICC hearings.
The ICC is set to begin hearings to determine whether Duterte will stand trial for alleged crimes against humanity in connection with his administration’s controversial anti-drug campaign.
Further developments are expected as proceedings move forward in The Hague. #END
