MANILA, Philippines — Budget airline Cebu Pacific announced Saturday the diversion of one Manila–Dubai flight and the cancellation of several others as airspace across parts of the Middle East, including the United Arab Emirates, remains closed due to escalating regional security concerns.
In an advisory posted on social media, the Gokongwei-led carrier confirmed that Flight 5J 14, originally bound for Dubai, was forced to turn back mid-flight and return to Manila after authorities restricted access to regional airspace. The aircraft was expected to arrive at Ninoy Aquino International Airport at approximately 10:45 p.m.
The airline likewise canceled the return service, Flight 5J 15, scheduled to operate from Dubai to Manila.
Additional Flight Cancellations Announced
With uncertainty surrounding the reopening of airspace over Dubai and neighboring Middle Eastern countries, Cebu Pacific also canceled its roundtrip Dubai flights (5J 14 and 5J 15) scheduled for March 1.
“We will continue to review flight operations to and from the Middle East in the coming days,” the airline said, noting that adjustments may still occur as the situation evolves.
“As this is a developing situation, some flight changes may take place in the next few days,” the advisory added.
Philippine Airlines Also Adjusts Operations
Cebu Pacific became the second Philippine carrier to announce operational disruptions linked to the Middle East airspace closure. Earlier, Philippine Airlines confirmed that two of its flights bound for Riyadh and Dubai were diverted, while four additional flights to and from the region were canceled through March 1.
Airlines worldwide have begun rerouting or suspending flights passing through Middle Eastern air corridors amid heightened military tensions in the region, raising concerns over continued travel disruptions in the coming days.
Passengers are advised to regularly check airline advisories and flight status updates before proceeding to the airport. ##
