President Marcos Signs Law Resetting Barangay and SK Elections to 2028

09/25/2026

MANILA, Philippines β€” President Ferdinand β€œBongbong” Marcos Jr. has signed a law postponing the 2026 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) to November 2028, giving incumbent local officials an extended term in office.

MalacaΓ±ang announced the signing of Republic Act No. 12326 on September 25, 2026. Marcos signed the measure on September 24, replacing the previously scheduled November 2, 2026, elections with a new schedule set for the second Monday of November 2028.

The law also extends the terms of elected barangay and SK officials from four years to five years, changing the schedule for future regular elections.

The measure gained legislative approval after the Senate passed it on September 14, with 13 senators voting in favor and five opposing it. The House of Representatives adopted the Senate version on September 16 before it was forwarded to the President for approval.

In a statement, Marcos said the extended period should allow incumbent officials to strengthen public service, complete ongoing projects, and address the needs of their communities, particularly families and young people.

The postponement also changes the preparations of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), which had scheduled the filing of certificates of candidacy (COCs) to begin on September 28 for the November 2026 polls.

With the new law in effect, the next regular barangay and SK elections will take place in November 2028. #
