SENATE APPROVES POSTPONEMENT OF BARANGAY AND SK ELECTIONS UNTIL 2028

09/14/2026

MANILA, Philippines β€” The Senate has approved, by a 13–5 vote, a measure postponing this year’s Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections to the second Monday of November 2028.

Under the proposal, barangay officials will serve five-year terms with a maximum of two terms, while SK officials will be limited to a single term.

The measure also allows mayors to appoint replacements for vacant SK positions, and extended officials will be considered to have served a full term.

Supporters said the move aims to give local officials more time to implement programs and projects. However, several senators opposed the measure, stressing the public’s rightβ€”especially that of the youthβ€”to elect their leaders. #
