MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Agriculture (DA) is urging young Filipinos to enter farming and fisheries to help address the aging workforce and ensure the next generation continues to sustain the sectors.
Agriculture Assistant Secretary Willie Ann Angsiy said distributing land, loans and subsidies alone would not be enough to attract young people. She stressed the need to make agriculture and fisheries more appealing as professions, business opportunities and long-term career paths.
Angsiy delivered the message during the 12th Ibero-American Conference of Ministers of Agriculture and Fisheries in Córdoba, Spain.
She also highlighted women’s contributions to agricultural production, processing and marketing, noting that they continue to face barriers to property ownership, financing, technology and leadership positions.
Angsiy said recognition of women’s roles should be matched by improved access to funding, technology, training, markets and leadership opportunities in cooperatives and agricultural organizations.
She represented the DA at the conference, which brought together representatives from 22 Ibero-American countries. The Philippines and Japan participated as invited associated countries, alongside international organizations. #
