The Department of Energy (DOE) has warned that electricity rates could rise and power supply could tighten as hotter and drier conditions associated with El Niño increase demand and affect power generation.
Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said higher temperatures could drive up electricity consumption, putting additional pressure on the power system and the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM).
Hydropower facilities could also face reduced generation capacity if water levels decline during prolonged dry conditions, potentially further tightening available supply.
The DOE said it is preparing measures to maintain adequate electricity supply and is urging consumers to conserve power, particularly during periods of high demand.
The agency has previously identified tight supply and strong demand as factors that can contribute to higher electricity prices in some areas.
