UNITED NATIONS — The United Nations has issued a warning over a strengthening El Niño event, which scientists say could become one of the strongest recorded in history.

According to climate experts, El Niño conditions are expected to persist until February 2027, with Pacific Ocean temperatures already more than 2°C above normal. This abnormal warming is expected to intensify extreme weather patterns worldwide.

If the warming trend continues, 2027 could become the hottest year on record, surpassing all previous global temperature highs, scientists warned.

The World Food Programme estimates that up to 50 million people could face severe hunger due to droughts, flooding, and crop failures across parts of South America, Africa, and Southeast Asia.

Early impacts are already being observed, including reduced shipping capacity in the Panama Canal and an increase in destructive wildfires in several regions.

Experts are urging governments to prepare early for worsening climate impacts and strengthen disaster response systems before the phenomenon reaches its peak intensity.
