MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has appointed Christina Frasco, secretary of the Department of Tourism (DOT), as Presidential Adviser for Sustainable and Resilient Communities, ending months of speculation about her future in government.
In a statement, Claire Castro, undersecretary of the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), said the President tasked Frasco to help strengthen the implementation and sustained follow-through of priority national initiatives at the community level.
Castro also clarified that Frasco had not resigned as tourism secretary, dismissing online reports that suggested otherwise. She emphasized that the new role is part of the administration’s broader strategy to address national development challenges.
Focus on Climate Resilience
The appointment comes as many regions across the Philippines continue to grapple with climate-related hazards and disruptions that affect local economies, tourism activities, and livelihoods. Frasco’s new role is expected to align government efforts toward building sustainable and resilient communities nationwide.
Transition at the DOT
Frasco will transition from her post at the DOT, where she spearheaded programs supporting tourism enterprises, promoting destinations, and strengthening partnerships with local government units.
In the meantime, Undersecretary Verna Buensuceso will serve as officer in charge of the department.
“The President expressed his appreciation for her service at the Department of Tourism and conveyed confidence that her experience working closely with local governments and communities will continue to support the administration’s priorities,” Castro said.
Controversies and Criticisms
Frasco’s tenure at the DOT has not been without controversy. She faced online criticism over several tourism campaigns, most notably the scrapped “Love the Philippines” campaign in 2023. The department also drew backlash for promotional materials that featured Frasco’s image rather than tourist destinations.
DOT officials, however, defended the agency’s strategy, insisting that its initiatives have delivered results based on internal data and visitor figures.
Looking Ahead
As Frasco takes on her new advisory role, observers note that her experience in tourism and local governance could prove valuable in addressing the challenges of climate resilience and sustainable development. Her appointment signals the administration’s intent to integrate community-level initiatives into national priorities. ##
