“As we mourn his passing, we give thanks for a life that helped shape the Philippine Republic and for a legacy that endures in our laws, our institutions, and our continuing pursuit of peace,” the family said.

De Venecia is survived by his wife, Pangasinan Fourth District Rep. Gina de Venecia, their children and grandchildren, and extended family. His wife recalled his humble beginnings in Dagupan City, where he grew up close to nature and rural life.

Born on December 26, 1936, De Venecia served seven terms in the House of Representatives, five of them as Speaker, making him the longest-serving Speaker in the post-war Congress. Fondly known as “JDV” or “Speaker Joe,” he was the architect of the *Rainbow Coalition, which united diverse political parties.

He authored landmark legislation including the Dollar Remittance Program, Bases Conversion and Development Act, Build-Operate-Transfer Law, Philippine Economic Zone Act, and the New Central Bank Act.

On the international stage, De Venecia championed interfaith dialogue and regional cooperation, playing a major role in organizations such as the International Conference of Asian Political Parties, Asian Parliamentary Assembly, and the International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace.

Dagupan City Mayor Belen Fernandez said the city mourns his passing, crediting De Venecia for leading its recovery after the devastating 1990 earthquake through national funding and rehabilitation efforts.

The De Venecia family said details of his wake and interment will be announced in the coming days.  #END
