MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines posted improved results in the 2025 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), with higher scores recorded in science, mathematics, and reading, the Department of Education (DepEd) announced.

Data showed the country achieved mean scores of 373 in science, 371 in mathematics, and 367 in reading—marking increases of 17, 16, and 20 points, respectively, compared to its 2022 performance.

During the national launch of the PISA 2025 results held Tuesday at Caloocan City Science High School, Education Secretary Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara highlighted the growing number of Filipino students reaching at least Level 2 proficiency, considered the baseline standard in the international assessment.

In science, the proportion of students meeting Level 2 or higher rose from 23 percent to 32 percent. Mathematics improved from 16 percent to 21 percent, while reading increased from 24 percent to 31 percent.

“This is a significant achievement for our learners and for the entire Philippine education system. But more than the numbers, we are seeing evidence that our learners are capable of making real and meaningful progress,” Angara said.

DepEd also noted that the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which administers PISA, identified the Philippines as the fastest-improving country in reading based on its 10-year trend analysis.

Officials said the gains reflect ongoing education reforms and strengthened learning interventions aimed at improving student performance nationwide. #
