Palawan Rep. Jose Alvarez rejected claims that the New Manila International Airport (NMIA) contributed to the recent flooding in Bulacan.
In an interview on “Politiko Talks,” Alvarez said his review of the area’s map showed the airport site is far from major rivers and drainage channels, and therefore does not obstruct the natural flow of floodwaters. He added that some waterways have already been cleared and stressed that such efforts should primarily be led by the government.
The NMIA, also known as the Bulacan International Airport, is a P736-billion project of San Miguel Aerocity Inc. being developed on a 2,500-hectare site in Bulakan.
Despite this, concerns persist among some groups, including fisherfolk, who warn the project could affect coastal wetlands and potentially worsen flooding.
San Miguel Aerocity, for its part, also denied the allegations, stating that hydrological studies and flood mitigation measures are integrated into the project’s design. #
