BONIFACIO GLOBAL CITY, Taguig — The so-called “flood control tunnel” in Bonifacio Global City (BGC) is actually a massive underground retarding basin located beneath Burgos Circle that helps manage excess rainwater during heavy downpours.
The structure has a capacity of around 22,000 cubic meters, equivalent to about eight Olympic-sized swimming pools, according to reports.
During heavy rainfall, the basin temporarily stores excess stormwater to prevent flooding in surrounding areas. Once the rain subsides, the water is slowly released into nearby drainage systems leading to creeks and eventually Manila Bay.
The system has been credited with helping reduce flooding in nearby major roads such as EDSA and Kalayaan Avenue.
As it is built underground, the facility remains largely unseen by the public, despite its key role in flood control. Its success has also sparked discussions on replicating similar systems in other flood-prone areas in Metro Manila. #
