TANZA, CAVITE — Tanza Mayor SM Matro shared his experience of allegedly becoming a victim of false and damaging information circulated on social media during his campaign for mayor, prompting him to call for greater responsibility in consuming and sharing online content.
In a brief interview with PinchLink Media Network, Mayor Matro encouraged Cavite residents to carefully verify information before believing or sharing posts, particularly those making serious claims against individuals or public officials.
The mayor stressed that not everything posted on social media should be treated as factual, especially when the information has no clear source, supporting evidence, or confirmation from credible news organizations or concerned authoritiesnand/or legit social media accounts. He also urged the public to distinguish between legitimate news reports and unverified social media posts.
According to Mayor Matro, responsible information sharing is important to prevent false or misleading claims from spreading and potentially damaging a person’s reputation. The mayor’s remarks came amid continuing concerns over the spread of misleading and unverified information on social media. He encouraged residents to check the source of a report, look for supporting evidence, and compare information with reports from established and credible news outlets before sharing it.
Authorities likewise continue to remind the public to refrain from creating or spreading unverified information and to report potentially deceptive, fraudulent, or defamatory online content through the appropriate channels, including the police and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Cybercrime Division.
Matro’s message was centered on the importance of responsible social media use, emphasizing that the public plays a role in preventing the spread of false information by verifying reports before sharing them online. #
