MANILA (UPDATED) — Public utility vehicles, buses, and freight service vehicles will receive temporary toll discounts starting March 23 as tollway operators implement relief measures amid rising fuel costs, according to the Department of Transportation.
The two-month toll relief will cover Class 1 public utility vehicles (PUVs) or jeepneys, Class 2 public utility buses (PUBs), and Class 3 vehicles involved in freight and logistics services.
The move follows an order from Ferdinand Marcos Jr. directing transport officials to find ways to cushion the impact of soaring oil prices on the transport sector amid tensions in the Middle East.
In a letter to Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon Lopez, Toll Regulatory Board Executive Director Jay Tugade said toll concessionaires agreed to voluntarily implement temporary discounts for essential transport sectors.
Lopez expressed gratitude to San Miguel Corporation, led by Ramon Ang, and Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation, led by Manny Pangilinan, for supporting the initiative, saying the measure would help PUV drivers, commuters, consumers, and businesses amid the ongoing oil crisis.
Under the adjusted toll rates, Class 2 vehicles may save up to P47 per end-to-end trip, while Class 3 vehicles could save as much as P72 per trip.
The toll discounts will be given through rebates credited weekly to all qualified vehicles.
Meanwhile, public utility jeepneys using the North Luzon Expressway open system may avail of the Pasada Pass Program, which offers unlimited daily passage for only P212. #
