MANILA, Philippines — The Senate has approved, by a 13–5 vote, a measure postponing this year’s Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections to the second Monday of November 2028.
Under the proposal, barangay officials will serve five-year terms with a maximum of two terms, while SK officials will be limited to a single term.
The measure also allows mayors to appoint replacements for vacant SK positions, and extended officials will be considered to have served a full term.
Supporters said the move aims to give local officials more time to implement programs and projects. However, several senators opposed the measure, stressing the public’s right—especially that of the youth—to elect their leaders. #
