MANILA, Philippines — The proposed measure extending the terms of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials to five years remains pending, which would move the scheduled 2026 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) to 2028.
On Wednesday, September 23, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. said he had not yet received the measure and had made no final decision on it.
Under Senate Bill No. 2387, which was adopted by the House of Representatives, the terms of barangay and SK officials would be extended to five years, with the next BSKE scheduled for the second Monday of November 2028. Subsequent elections would also be held every five years.
Meanwhile, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) continues preparations for the current BSKE schedule on November 2, 2026. The filing of Certificates of Candidacy (COCs) is set for September 28 to October 5 while no law has yet taken effect postponing the elections.
If signed into law, the measure would implement the five-year terms and move the BSKE to 2028. For now, the final outcome remains dependent on the President’s action on the measure. #
